1 Thing I’m Doing

Sowing Good Things Each Month

It's a fact - most New Year’s goals barely survive January. And while I’m not one for making New Year's resolutions, I do like to set little goals and wishes for myself.

One such wish I made almost four months ago is still going strong — and it’s been a very fruitful one at that. Here it is.

I decided that with every new moon, I would tend to my veggie patch and plant something new. In true circle of life fashion, I’ve been joyfully clearing out the remnants of the old bounty, preparing the space and planting something seasonally new - all whilst relishing in the energy of new beginnings.

It’s felt beautiful to align with nature’s rhythms — using the fresh-start energy of the new moon to sow good things, both in the soil and in my soul.

This week will mark my fourth new moon of 2025, and my little garden is thriving.

From broccoli and cauliflower to cabbage, garlic, spring onions, silverbeet, lettuce, and more — every green shoot feels like a celebration.

And even better? This little monthly goal has quietly become a habit... that has now become part of me.

Here’s the happy gardening rhythm I’ve found:

🌕 Full Moon — As I tend to my garden, I start envisioning the next planting as some of my crops, like the moon, reach their peak.

🌗 Waning Moon — I start consulting my trusty planting calendar - always following the golden rule - plant what you and the family love to eat.

🌑 New Moon — The week of the new moon, I sow something new and breathe life into fresh beginnings.

It’s become a joyful, grounding ritual — one that connects me to nature, the seasons, and the nourishing food that ties my family together each day.

Remember, food is more than just a combination of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

Food is an electromagnetic barcode of the sun's energy and what's possible at a particular time (season) and place (latitude). The food we grow in our own backyard (and locally) is THE most quantumly coherent nourishment you can find on the planet.

✔️ Action Item: I encourage you to join in this gardening rhythm — whether you have a backyard, a balcony, or just a few sunny pots. You can start simple. Herbs, lettuces, and silverbeet are easy, abundant, and satisfying to grow.

And if gardening doesn't tickle your fancy, perhaps there is another project or hobby you can enjoy each new moon that brings joy to your sou.

2 Things I’ve Learnt

A Surprising Truth About Garlic

During my last new moon planting, I admired some plump garlic bulbs at the nursery counter. They looked just like the ones at my organic store — and I wondered, why not just plant a clove from my last shopping trip?

A friendly chat with the nursery staff opened my eyes to a shady side of the garlic world:

Supermarket Garlic Is Treated to Prevent Sprouting

Did you know that supermarket garlic is treated to prevent it from sprouting? It took me aback as I questioned why?

Looking into this further, I’ve now discovered that this garlic de-sprouting process is a real thing and can involve the following:

  1. Sprout inhibitors – chemicals like *maleic hydrazide* may be used to delay or prevent sprouting.
  2. Irradiation – some garlic is exposed to ionising radiation to kill bacteria and inhibit sprouting.
  3. Cold storage – temperature-controlled environments can also suppress sprouting, though not permanently.

These treatments make supermarket garlic less reliable for planting, since the bulbs may not sprout at all or grow weakly.

What About Organic Garlic?

With organic garlic, the story is a bit different, but still worth a closer look.

Organic certification typically prohibits the use of synthetic sprout inhibitors and irradiation. So organic garlic is less likely to be treated with those methods. However, not all organic garlic may be ideal for planting. It might still have been stored in cold conditions that slow down sprouting, and it may come from varieties not well-suited for your backyard or growing season.

So, while organic garlic might sprout and could work in a pinch, I'm not 100% sure if it's as reliable as certified seed garlic from a reputable nursery, as I haven't tried it myself. Another task for this full moon. Seed garlic is chosen for resilience, disease resistance, and local suitability — kind of like getting a starter with a better success rate.

✔️ Action Item - If you’re looking to plant garlic, and I hope you do - we can be garlic buddies together, ❤️ your best bet is to buy organic seeds or your garlic bulb from your favourite nursery or garden centre – as it's specifically been grown, stored, and sold for planting. And if you have experience otherwise, please share as I'd love to hear and learn more.

The Unscrambled Truth About Eggs

If you’ve ever felt guilty about loving eggs...you’ll love this story I came across this week.

For years, eggs were unfairly demonised — blamed for cholesterol, heart disease, and just about everything else.

“Eat the whites, skip the yolk,” they said. And while you’re at it - have it with dry toast, no butter... no joy 🙄.

But the truth? Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse — and they’ve been unfairly given a bad wrap.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, eggs aren’t just food — they’re a form of medicine, nourishing our five vital organs: the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys. And when you zoom in on the nutrients packed into that little shell, it’s easy to see why.

Eggs: A Five Organ Powerhouse

Eggs are loaded with:

  • bioavailable protein
  • all essential amino acids
  • a whole alphabet of vitamins — A, B2, B5, B12, D, E
  • Iron, zinc, selenium, and choline - a brain booster most people are deficient in, and
  • Lutein for your eyes

Modern science is catching up to what traditional wisdom already knew: eggs support detoxification, improve cardiovascular health, fuel brain function, and help regulate blood pressure and immune function.

And what about cholesterol? Research shows that for most people, dietary cholesterol from eggs has little to no effect on blood cholesterol. In fact, eggs may even improve your cholesterol profile by raising HDL — the “good” kind.

So whether you’re poaching, scrambling, or soft-boiling - eat your eggs with joy. They’re real food. They’re ancestral food. They’re Unstoppable food.

✔️ Action Item - There’s nothing like a couple of googie-eggs to start your day! A powerhouse of protein, opt for organic to make sure you get all the goodness whilst being kinder to the girls and planet. Remember, your eggs are served best outside, under morning sunlight with your bare feet firmly grounded on the earth. Start your day like this, and you’ll truly be unstoppable!

A Quick Note: Who Should Limit Eggs?

If you or a loved one has end-stage liver or chronic kidney disease, limiting high-protein foods like eggs may be necessary. Please consult your trusted wellness practitioner to create a plan that's right for you. 🧡

3 Things To Explore

Gardening Is a Lifesaver

Ever looked at the weeds outside your window and grumbled? Turns out, those weeds — and everything else you do in the garden — could be saving your life.

A Taiwanese study tracked over 5,000 adults aged 50+ for 11 years. Daily gardening was linked to an 18% lower risk of death from all causes — especially powerful for older adults with mobility challenges.

Meanwhile, a US study following nearly 14,000 adults over 17 years found that gardeners had a:

  • 24% lower risk of death overall
  • 35% lower risk of cardiovascular death
  • 19% lower risk of cancer death

And the more often and longer people gardened, the greater the benefit — a beautiful dose-response effect. The circadian health warrior in me can’t help but connect the dots:

🌞 More sunshine +

🌱 More movement +

🧘‍♀️ More stress relief =

Gardening isn’t just good for your soul — it’s good for your lifespan.

Other Life-Extending Hobbies

Curious about what else adds years to your life? Two more winners are tennis and golf — which both just happen to be outdoor, sunshine-drenched activities that nourish your body and spirit.

Tennis: A Game for Life — Literally

A Danish study tracking 8,500+ adults for 25 years found that tennis players lived nearly 10 years longer than sedentary people — which was the biggest longevity boost of any sport studied.

Why? It's likely the winning combination again of movement + social connection. Plus sunshine of course right?

Backing this up, a UK study of 80,000 adults found that those who played racquet sports like tennis, or badminton had a:

💪 47% lower risk of death from any cause

💪 56% lower risk of heart disease death

Final Sunny Hobby Thoughts

Whether you’re tending to your garden or hitting a tennis ball, one thing is clear:

Sunshine, movement, and connection are the real fountains of youth.

Here’s to planting, playing, and thriving — one joyful step (and sprout) at a time.
